You need more than 10,000 miles for a free flight on United. The number of United miles needed for a free flight is determined by distance. Flights under 700 miles only require 10,000 award miles. Flights over 700 miles will cost at least 12,500 miles.
Do you get miles back if you cancel a United flight?
If you cancel your flight 31 days or more before departure, you will not pay a fee to do so and your miles will be credited back. If you don’t show up for your flight, you’ll have to pay $125 to have your miles redeposited, regardless of your status level.
