A recent PBS documentary identified Kilauea, on the island of Hawaii, as “the most dangerous volcano in the world”. A curious choice, in my opinion, for any assessment of the danger of a volcano is to take into account both the intrinsic danger and the number of lives at risk. Kilauea’s eruptions are certainly spectacular.
Is Hawaii’s Largest Volcano Erupting Continuously?
Lava has poured out of Puu Oo Crater since 1983, making Kilauea the longest continuously erupting volcano in the world. Hawaii’s Kilauea erupts. Evacuations underway as lava threatens communities. Like many Hawaiian volcanoes, Kilauea is made of basalt, a type of lava that flows very easily.
